Mauritius and Mozambique hold forum to reinforce economic partnerships

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA (ADV) – The Mauritian and Mozambican governments have held a business forum and a networking event aimed at reinforcing their economic partnerships.

The events organised by the Economic Development Board (EDB) were held at the Hilton Mauritius Resort and Spa in Flic en Flac, recently.

Mozambique President, Filipe Nyusi, said his country was ready to welcome investors in the Mozambican economic and strategic zones.

“This forum will strengthen business and cooperation ties between the two countries,” said President Nyusi.

He listed the resources available in Mozambique which include gold, aluminium, phosphorus, precious stones, gas, and fertile land among others while. He also lauded his country’s connectivity and the port facilities in Maputo.

The Mozambican President further recalled that several memoranda of understanding have been signed in the fields of environment and tourism between the EDB and the Confederation of Business Associations of Mozambique.

These memoranda were for establishing practical framework for cooperation with regard to trade and investment, trade promotion and strengthening institutional relations and capacity building through mutual cooperation

EDB Vice Chairman, Azim Currimjee, highlighted that the relationship between the two countries dates from the colonial era as 60 percent of slaves brought to Mauritius were from Mozambique.

“Mauritius is a peaceful country with an honourable place in the rankings of international institutions,” he said, recalling that Mauritius was well placed to invest and serve the interests of the continent.

The Mauritian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Seetanah Lutchmeeraraidoo and other personalities and economic actors from Mauritius and Mozambique also attended the events.
