African first ladies rebrand own organization

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (ADV) – After the rebranding the African Union, the First Ladies of the continent have also announced a change in the nomenclature of their umbrella body.

Henceforth, their platform will be known as the ‘Organization of African First Ladies for Development’ with the acronym: OAFLAD.

The First Ladies made the name change during their 22nd General Assembly held in parallel with the 32nd African Union summit in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on 11 February 2019.

It was formerly called: “The Organization of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS” or OAFLA and was established in 2002 with the objective to help fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic and provide assistance topical maternal and child health issues.

The organization always holds its general assembly in parallel with those of their husbands or at the sidelines of leading world events where their husbands were in attendance.

It is currently led by First Lady of Burkina Faso, Adjoavi Sika Kabore with her Kenyan counterpart Margaret Kenyatta as vice-president.
