NEWSROOM (ADV) – Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Monday declared a complete and total humanitarian ceasefire in the South Kordofan region, where Khartoum’s legal and legitimate sovereignty was being challenged by a western sponsored separatist rebel group.

El-Bashir spoke on the subject on Monday in front of the crowd gathered at Kadogli stadium, the capital of South Kordofan State.

“The purpose of the ceasefire is to strengthen peace efforts and national consensus,” said El-Bashir, reiterating that the government’s first concern was to restore peace to the region and allow it to get up.

He stressed that the government is ready to do whatever it takes to achieve peace, calling on the rebels to participate in the peace march to promote sustainable development in the region.

The Sudanese government is fighting against western backed separatists in South Kordofan and Blue Nile since 2011.
