JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA (ADV) – The Tanzanian Child Fund in partnership with the Mumbwa Child Development Agency have built a school dormitory at Mwembezhi Secondary at a cost of one-million-Kwacha.
The 64-bed dormitory is primarily built to offer a safe environment for girls who struggle to find accommodation during school hours.
Mumbwa Child Development Agency Executive Director Gracious Nkete told the media that the modern infrastructure hostel will be the first one of its kind in the district.
Different stakeholders were engaged for this project before it came to life and it came to light that there was a high rate of drop outs in the school, especially with girls and teenage pregnancies hence the need to come up with the project which will help cushion the challenge.
Of the one million kwacha, seven hundred thousand kwacha was spent on building the hostel and three hundred thousand kwacha was spent on the training of teachers, Parents Teachers Association (PTA) and pupils on school governance and child protection.
The training were conducted at Mwembezhi secondary school.
Shibuyinji District Commissioner, Jairos Simukoko told said that he is happy with the development as the project will help reduce teen pregnancies and end child marriage.
