Harare, Zimbabwe (ADV) – Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa has congratulated country’s senior national football team, known as the warriors, on their qualification for the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament to be staged in Egypt this June.
The warriors booked their tickets for the continental soccer showpiece after beating Congo Brazzaville 2-0 in Harare.

Writing on his twitter account on Monday morning, Mnangagwa hailed the team’s performance saying they had shown incredible strength and resilience.

“Our boys demonstrated strength and resilience, pride and prowess. You are an inspiration to us all your hard work and famous victory serve as an example to the entire nation,” Mnangagwa tweeted.

Belgium based warriors captain Knowledge Musona, who played despite suffering a groin injury, scored a beautiful volley just before halftime to add to Khama Billiart’s fine free kick in what proved to be the only goals of the game.

The game came against the backdrop of a natural disaster that struck Zimbabwe last week and a moment of silence for the victims of Cyclone Idai that left a trail of destruction in Zimbabwe’s Eastern province of Manicaland.

Over 200 people have so far been confirmed dead from the effects of the cylone.

The players also wore black armbands and ZIFA committed a dollar from each ticket sold to the victims.
