Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (ADV) – Mali’s Under 20 soccer team has won its first trophy in the category after beating Senegal 3-2 on penalties in Niger on Sunday.

Both sides equalled 1-1 after full-time play with Mali opening the score through Boubacar Traore in the 16th minute and maintained the lone goal until the second half when Senegal’ Amadou Ndiaye equalized in the 75 th minute.

Senegal’s Dion Lopy, Amadou Ndiaye and Ousseynou Niang were the unfortunate players to miss spot-kicks, giving Mali their first Under-20 continental title.

Earlier in the group elimination round in Group B Senegal beat Mali 2-0 and won the three other group matches.

This year’s third place winners are South Africa who also beat the seven-times winner of the trophy Nigeria 5-3 on penalties.

Hence, South Africa, Nigeria, Mali and Senegal will represent Africa at the Under-20 World Cup which kicks off in Poland in May this year.
