Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (ADV) – Kenyan President has notched China to place premium on African goods, reduce their import taxes and import more.
Uhuru Kenyatta said by doing so, China will be helping African business people to access the vast Chinese market and alleviate poverty on the continent .
Mr. Kenyatta made the statement on Monday evening when he delivered a keynote address at the inaugural China International Import Expo being held in Shanghai.
He appealed to his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping to enact measures to proactively raise the volume of goods coming from the African continent to China.
Further to that, he urged China to provide technical assistance to Sanitary and Phyto Sanitary (SPS) institutions in Africa to comply with Chinese SPS standards and other international requirements.
Responding, President Xi pledged to lead the fight for open markets, “even as some big economies exhibit isolationist and protectionist tendencies” apparently in direct reference to the United States and France.
China has a market of over a billion and is currently Kenya’s largest trading partner with the volume of trade surpassing the 4 billion dollar mark in 2017.
