Johannesburg, South Africa (ADV) – Malawian President, Peter Mutharika today officially launched the Mzimba Integrated Urban Water and Sanitation Project worth $22.85 million, African Daily Voice has learnt.

“The project is part of the Mutharika government agenda to promote soci0-economic growth of Malawi through provision of potable water supply and improved sanitation across Malawi,” said the government through its social media pages, Official Malawi Government Online.

Citizens have welcomed the government’s move describing it as a “commendable development”.

“Nice project, we need more of that in many areas. That’s #Sustainable_Development,” commented Patrick Mwanyoka on the government’s post on Facebook.

Meanwhile, Kho Mwamzy said his view was that this was the job of a Minister, not of a president.

The Northern Region Water Board (NRWB) kick started construction works on the project in 2017, with a call to stakeholders and partners to maintain the team spirit and standards for perfect implementation.

NRWB Public Relations Officer, Edward Nyirenda had previously told the media that the project which looked at upgrading and extension of Mzimba water supply system had three main components, which were water infrastructure development costing about $ 17.3 million, sanitation and hygiene $ 1.0 million and project management 2.1 million with all the three working simultaneously.
