JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA (ADV) –

Director of Duke global health institute, Christopher Plowe, said he expects the newly-launched laboratory to create more opportunities for upcoming medical practitioners and improve the standard of the health sector in Kenya.

“We expect the laboratory will create new opportunities for the talented and dedicated workers from each of our institutions,” said Plowe.

Moi University, a public university located in Kesses, has partnered with Webuye sub county referral hospital in Bungoma County to open a laboratory where students will perform academic researches.

The laboratory was launched recently and has been funded by the Duke global health institute with an amount of KSh.1 million.

‘I envision the laboratory as a hub of activity where people will come to learn share and seek solutions to problems,” said Plowe.

The director added that the new partnership will benefit residents in receiving better health care.

‘It will also support and enhance the important research being undertaken at Webuye on interventions for human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), hypertension, diabetes, malaria, and childhood fevers,” he added.

The laboratory will help clinicians to acquire skills that can help with diagnosis.

He said universities and hospitals need to work together to advance the training of health professionals, pursue critical research questions and build capacity for improved care.
