JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA (ADV) – Malawi’s Minister of Information and Information Technology (ICT), Henry Mussa has said government is working on establishing its newspaper as a way of countering “fake news which exposes the public to untrustworthy news”.
The country only has two privately owned national newspapers The Nation and The Daily Times.
While speaking during a familiarization tour to Regional Information offices in the South, Mussa emphasised that it is ripe and high time that government established a competitive paper so that citizens can have access to reliable information on various public policies and programmes.
“The main aim of creating this paper is to have an informed citizenry,” said Mussa.“The newspaper is projected to be functional by March this year. In fact it was supposed to be functional by now but due to other challenges it did not hit the street. All necessary preparatory and implementations are almost done.”
Mussa bemoaned lack of information amongst citizens hence a need to an alternative source from a government perspective.
“It is sad that in the present day, people in the country are not aware of the various government projects, and other developments government has done since it came into power like the construction of Ida Chilembwe Community Technical College in Chiradzulu,” added Mussa highlighting the need of high quality journalism.
