NEWSROOM (ADV) – On Friday, the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) bought about 36,000 tons of maize valued at about $ 9 million from the Tanzanian National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) for refugees in the western Kigoma region.

WFP Representative in Tanzania Michael Dunford and NFRA Acting Director Vumilia Zikankuba signed an agreement on the purchase of maize at a ceremony chaired by President John Magufuli in Dar es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania.

The directorate of presidential communication, quoting Dunford, said in a statement that the 36,000 tons of maize purchased by WFP are part of the 160,000 tons of corn purchased by the UN food agency.

Dunford said maize will be for refugees in East Africa and neighboring countries with food shortages.

For his part, President Magufuli praised WFP for this purchase, which will help refugees living in the country.

Tanzania hosts some 300,000 refugees, many of whom are women and children. These refugees have fled instability, conflict and violence in their home countries in search of a safer place.
