Johannesburg, South Africa (ADV) – The commander of Mozambique’s army, Ezequiel Muianga, has said the Armed Forces of Defence were “exclusively non-partisan” and that they obeyed a vertical command, meaning “scrupulous obedience” was demanded, African Daily Voice has learnt.
According to Lusa, General Muianga spoke yesterday urging for “scrupulous obedience” by the 11 Renamo officials nominated for management positions in the country’s Armed Forces and called for a non-partisan position in the exercise of their functions.
Mozambique’s president Filipe Nyusi and leader of the main opposition Renamo Ossufo Momade recently met “to review progress made in the implementation of the memorandum of understanding on military matters and set out the next steps to speed up the process.
This was the first meeting in eight months between Nyusi and Momade, who was named the group’s leader in January after the death of the party’s veteran head Afonso Dhlakama.
The current negotiation process between the Mozambican government and Renamo kicked off a year and a half ago when Mozambique’s president Nyusi travelled to Gorongosa, in central Mozambique, on 6 August to meet with the then leader of the main opposition party, Dhlakama.
Muianga added that for the success of the functions attributed, they should “contribute in an “effective,” “continuous and permanent” way in defending the territorial integrity, sovereignty and the homeland.
