NEWSROOM (ADV) – The Egyptian interior ministry said on Tuesday that 16 militants were killed in the North Sinai city of Arish.

“The national security forces spotted two bases for terrorists who have planned for a series of terrorist operations against vital properties and important figures in remote areas in Arish,” said a ministry statement.

After the forces launched a raid on the hideouts, the two sides exchanged fire, the statement added.

Several weapons, ammunitions and explosive devices were sized during the raid.

The statement did not specify the date of the anti-terror raid in Arish.

Late on Monday, a militant detonated an explosive device when being pursued in the al-Darb al-Ahmar district of Egypt’s capital Cairo, killing two policemen and the militant, and wounding three others.

Egyptian forces have been carrying out an anti-terror campaign since the ouster of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

Terror attacks, which killed hundreds of soldiers and policemen, have gradually expanded from their main center in North Sinai Province to other provinces including Cairo.
