JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA (ADV) – An opposition alliance that was announced last week by Malawi’s Vice President and United Transformation Movement (UTM) leader Saulos Chilima and former President Joyce Banda Peoples Party (PP) has collapsed, according to reports from Malawi.
This came after Chilima rejected the proposal to have Banda’s son Roy Kachale as his running-mate for the upcoming Tripartite Elections set for May.
Yesterday the PP announced through a statement released Monday that it has pulled out of the Alliance because UTM ‘has failed to comply with the terms of the agreement and the solidarity that existed between UTM and PP.’
Unconfirmed reports said Banda was insisting that Chilima picks his son as his running-mate.
The UTM Publicity Director Joseph Chidanti Malunga said the party will come with an official response to the matter today.
Earlier, Banda praised Chilima as the right person with energy to win the presidential election scheduled on May 21 this year.
