JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA (ADV) – Ugandan National Water and Sewerage Corporation Managing Director Dr Silver Mugisha said the city of Kampala and south-western Uganda is currently facing water shortages.

Mugisha announced this during a meeting attended by Ministry of Finance and the French government, where Uganda and France signed a loan contract in a move to address sanitation challenges in Kampala.

“It is true that the current demand is about 300m litres a day and we are only able to supply 240m, so, we have a deficit,” said Mugisha.

The managing director has also stated that Uganda has a deficit of 60 million litres of water a day.

Minister of Finance, Matia Kasaija signed the loan for the Kampala Water-Lake Victoria Water Sanitation II project worth €150m (Shs723b) provided by the Agence Francaise de Developpement (AFD).

Previously, Kasaija had signed a first loan worth €120m to increase the volume of clean water as well as the network needed to meet the demand of the growing population of the Greater Kampala.

Kasaija said the sanitation project is included for the vision 2040, a long -term plan containing aspirations of Ugandans to operationalise the country’s vision which is, “A Transformed Ugandan Society from a Peasant to a Modern and Prosperous Country within 30 Years”.
