JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA (ADV) – Rwanda Correction Services (RCS) spokesperson, Hillary Sengabo, has confirmed that security measures will be tightened at the Huye Prison.

Following an attempted escape by three inmates at the prison facility, Sengabo said the RCS is installing CCTV cameras, raising the height of prison fences and installing towers on all prisons.

Three inmates were recently busted by warden officers after they used ropes to attempt an escape at the Huye-based prison. The prison warders scared the inmates by firing bullets in the air in a hope to frighten them, the trio jailbirds resisted.

“We are facing budget constraints but we will keep working on it to ensure that our prisons are safe and that we close all gaps for inmates to escape,” said Sengabo.

RCS has also indicated that more wardens will be employed to achieve a ratio of at least 20 inmates per prison warden.

Currently, the RCS employs 1,700 prison wardens to watch over 66, 000 inmates.

“Our target is to recruit more prison wardens, we also want to carry out more awareness and mobilization,” Sengabo said.

Nyarugugenge, Nyagatare and Rwamagana prisons are already expanding the prison fences.

Sengabo discussed the new security measure to prisoners during a meeting with district officials, noting that inmates should avoid endangering their lives by attempting jailbreaks.
