NEWSROOM (ADV) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has assigned a visit to Algiers on Thursday (January 24th) to discuss the strengthening of bilateral multi-dimensional cooperation between Algeria and Russia, as well as regional issues.

Syria, Yemen, Libya and Mali

On the agenda of this two-day visit, the two countries’ heads of diplomacy reiterated the unity of their visions on regional crises as well as in the Middle East.

“Algeria and Russia are always in favor of the application of international law and we insist on the peaceful and diplomatic resolution of regional conflicts. We support the coordinating role of the UN and the respect of the will of each people for the determination of their path and destiny,” said the head of Russian diplomacy at a press conference. And to clarify “Russia is cooperating with Turkey and Iran on peace negotiations in Syria under the provisions of the Astana negotiations.”

Sergei Lavrov said Algeria and Russia agreed on the resolution of the Syrian crisis on the basis of UN decision 22-54, and respect for the sovereignty and unity of the Syrian Arab Republic.

“We are in the process of fighting against the residues of terrorist groups in Syria, and we support the improvement of the humanitarian situation, the return of Syrian refugees to their country and the political dialogue,” he added.

Regarding the conflicts in the North Africa / Sahel-Sahara region, the head of the Russian diplomacy praised the role of Algeria in the pacification of Libya and Mali.

Regarding other regional conflicts, Sergei Lavrov said that his country shares with Algeria the same position on the crisis in Yemen. “But this should not make us forget the old Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” he said.

In addition to regional security issues, the two countries agreed on the growth of estimated trade for the moment at $ 4.5 billion, by strengthening the business community and promoting multi-sectoral investments in both countries.

Indeed, this visit “is part of the regular political dialogue and ongoing dialogue between the two countries established since the signing of the Joint Declaration on the Strategic Partnership between Algeria and the Russian Federation, April 2 2001, after the state visit of the President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, to Russia, “recalls the Algerian official agency APS.

As a reminder, Russia is a traditional and strategic partner of Algeria since the first hours of its independence in 1962.
