Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (ADV) – Nigeria’s leading public works company has agreed to help build about 100,000 housing units in Liberia, sources said Wednesday.
A memorandum of understanding signed in Monrovia on Tuesday between Liberia’s National Housing Authority (NHA) and Chaste Mutual Investment Limited of Nigeria sealed the agreement for the project.
The counties of Grand Bassa and Margibi which are neighbouring Montserado county which is the seat of government will be the lieux where the housing units will be constructed.
The memorandum states in part, that Nigeria’s Chaste Mutual will provide financial and technical support while the Liberian counterpart, NHA will shoulder responsibility for providing the other aspect including manpower.
In his remarks at the signing ceremony, Dr Ayo Olatunde of Nigeria said the agreement was in fulfilment of the Liberian government’s Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development.
He boasted that his company has the capacity and experience to develop housing units anywhere on the continent.
Housing facilities had been President George Weah’s flagship programs and election campaign promises.
No indication of the amount or timeline for the construction of the project was declared at the ceremony, but sources said the groundbreaking ceremony would be launched in the next three months.
Liberia is among the countries with the biggest housing deficits in the world.
