JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA (ADV) – According to Malawian Airline, a plane carrying Malawi Vice President, Saulos Chilima, was forced to undertake an emergency landing at OR Tambo International Airport in South Africa after a tire deflated on the plane while it was landing earlier on today.
Malawian Airlines Public relations officer Joseph Josiah told media that the pilot had to take precautionary measures by stopping the plane on the runway when the tire deflated.
“One of ABS or Antiskid system, as we call it, was not working on one of the tires.
As a precaution, the captain opted to have the aircraft towed to avoid damage to the landing wheel system,” Mangwana said.
Reports quote Captain Abraham Mangwana from Malawian Airlines saying that the plane did not crash-land but one tire deflated during normal braking.
Media reports from Malawi suggest that Chilima boarded the plane at Kamuzu International Airport this morning on his way to the United States of America.
According to Special Assistant to the Vice President on Economic Affairs Milward Tobias, Chilima has travelled to America for private engagements.
The Vice President is expected back home on 24th January through Kamuzu International Airport.
