NEWSROOM (ADV) – Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) will not change the dates of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) nor the COSAFA Cup, despite the change of 2017 AFCON dates from January-February to June-July.

The AFCON tournament will take place from June 21 to July 19 in Egypt.

Thus, the players from Namibia, South Africa, Angola, Zimbabwe and Madagascar who have qualified for this year’s AFCON tournament, will have to play in the COSAFA Cup firstly.

The reason for the change of the 2017 AFCON dates was to end disputes that had been ongoing between European clubs especially those in England and African football associations, as the English football league does not go into the Christmas break between December and January and they were unhappy to lose their top players during the crucial time of the year.

The AFCON is hosted every two years, while the COSAFA cup takes place every year.
