Johannesburg, South Africa (ADV) – South Africa is set to host 35 000 cyclists in this year’s Cape Town Cycle Tour schedule for this weekend in the Western Cape province.
The annual event is one of the most anticipated in the race calendar for cyclists from around the world. It takes place on one of the world’s most beautiful routes, and it helps to market the province.
The province’s Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Economic Development and Tourism, Beverley Schäfer, said cycling tourism and events like this tour provide a major economic boost to the local economy.
“We focus on growing cycling and cycling tourism as a way to stimulate growth and create jobs. It is our pleasure to welcome all the riders to our province and we wish all riders a safe and enjoyable ride in 2019,” she said.
“The atmosphere in the city around the race, with the influx of riders and their supporters is always remarkable. The event also provides an opportunity to market the sport to young people in the province, who get to see elite riders taking part.”
The Minister expressed gratefulness to the Cape Town Cycle Tour and the Cape Town Cycle Trust for giving back to the people of the province through ongoing charity and development work.
The Cape Town Cycle Tour is an annual cycle race hosted in Cape Town, South Africa, usually 109 km long. It is the first event outside Europe to be included in the Union Cyclist Internationale’s Golden Bike Series
