NEWSROOM (ADV) – The Egyptian army has discovered and destroyed nine smuggling tunnels in North Sinai Province in northeastern Egypt, the Egyptian army spokesman said in a statement released on Thursday.
“These tunnels are used by terrorists to infiltrate and smuggle weapons and explosives,” Egyptian army spokesman Tamer Al-Refai said in a statement.
The forces also discovered and destroyed two vehicles and seized 40 bombs and a quantity of materials used to make explosives, he said.
Earlier Thursday, Egyptian police said they shot dead seven terrorists in Giza province near Cairo, the capital, and that a police officer was wounded in the firefight.
Egypt faces terrorist actions that have killed hundreds of police and soldiers and civilians since the overthrow of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 following mass demonstrations against the power he had been practicing for a year and against the now banned group of Muslim Brotherhood, to which he belonged.
Most of these attacks were concentrated in North Sinai and claimed by a branch of the Islamic State (IS) group in Sinai.
