JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA (ADV) – In their quest to mobilise leadership to deliver safe, affordable and healthy diets for all, Co-Chairs of the Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition, Sir John Beddington and H.E John A. Kufuor recently welcomed Dr Shenggen Fan as new Panel Member.

Sir Beddington, is a former UK Chief Scientific Advisor while Kufuor is a former President of Ghana.

Fan is Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and one of the Champions of the SDG Target 12.3, dedicated to accelerating progress toward cutting global food loss and waste. He serves as a member of the Lead Group for the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement, and also serves as an advisor to many national governments (including China and Vietnam) on agriculture, food security and nutrition.

Sir Beddington mentioned that the Global Panel commends Dr Fan for his outstanding commitment to and leadership in agriculture, food security and nutrition.

“He will be a great addition to the Panel and its efforts to mobilise leadership to deliver safe, affordable and healthy diets for all.”

Upon his appointment, Dr Fan expressed commitment to the cause ahead.

“Working towards improving nutrition offers the opportunity to transform agriculture, promote economic growth, and improve human capital. I am delighted to join a Panel of likeminded and highly committed nutrition champions,” he said.

In November 2018, Global Panel Members met in Rome to agree on an ambitious programme of activities for 2019. The Panel strongly supported Dr Fan’s nomination, and looks forward to continuing to provide policy leaders with the tools and knowledge needed to incorporate food systems and healthy diets into their policy planning – enabling healthier, higher quality diets for all.
