NEWSROOM (ADV) – At least 15 terrorists were killed in a large-scale joint operation by the Nigerian army and the French Barkahne force on Thursday night in the western Tillaberi region near the Malian border, the report said official source Saturday in Niamey.

According to a statement from the Nigerian Ministry of Defence broadcast Saturday night on public television, 21 motorcycles belonging to terrorists were destroyed and 26 weapons of all calibres including a machine gun were also recovered during this operation, while no loss, “neither in human life nor in material”, is deplored on the side of the loyal forces.

Niger’s Minister of Defence Kalla Moutari took the opportunity to “extend warm congratulations to the Nigerian Armed Forces in general and Operation Dongo in particular for their continued commitment to the fight against terrorism and organized crime” , said the same source.

As a reminder, for more than five years, northern Mali has been home to several terrorist groups close to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Ansar Dine and other Islamist movements, as well as drug traffickers who carry out deadly attacks on Muslims on both sides of the Niger-Malian border.

The Nigerian government believes that this situation is the consequence of the events that occurred in Libya in 2011, which resulted in the sanctuary of the northern part of Mali by terrorist groups that subsequently dispersed throughout the sub-region, particularly in Niger in the Tillaberi and Tahoua regions.

It is in this part of Niger that four US Special Forces soldiers and as many Nigerian soldiers were killed in a terrorist attack on October 4, 2017.

Nigerian security forces launched Operation Dongo to track down terrorists throughout the western part of the country, which has also been in a state of emergency for nearly two years.
