NEWSROOM (ADV) – The French army launched a raid on a terrorist organization on Thursday night in Mali, neutralizing some 30 terrorists, most likely Hamadoun Kouffa, a major jihadist leader, said French General Francois Lecointre, chief of state, Major of the armies of France Friday in a statement.
“At this stage of the evaluation of the operation, it appears that about thirty terrorists were put out of action, among which are probably the head of the Katiba Massina, Hamadoun Kouffa, and its main cadres”, made to know the chief of staff of the armies of France.
The raid took place in the Malian region of Mopti, and combined the action of many air assets: Mirage 2000, Tiger and Gazelle helicopters backed by Reaper drones, C135 tanker and maneuver helicopters, the general said, adding that air strikes made it possible to achieve a stunning effect on the objective, then to exploit this action by helicopter assaults and by the ground engagement of the French military.
This operation marks an additional success in the struggle waged by the French armies alongside the Malian armed forces, those of the joint G5 Sahel force and MINUSMA, for security in Mali and the Sahel, according to the same source.
The French Minister of the Armed Forces, Florence Parly, hailed in another communiqué the courageous and effective action of the soldiers involved in this operation.
“This new success of the French military engagement in the Sahel illustrates our desire to fight relentlessly against terrorism, and it also demonstrates our resolve to help the Malian authorities in their daily struggle to stabilize and pacify their country,” he said.
