SA’s 25 years of diplomatic relations with Asian nations

Johannesbourg, South Africa (ADV) – Today South Africa is hosting a seminar and a culture and heritage exhibition as it host the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Africa and several South East Asian Countries.

The country maintains strong political relations with the four South East Asian countries which include Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

An initiative spearheaded by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), it seeks to celebrate diplomatic relations which were established with Malaysia and Philippines in November 1993 and Thailand and Vietnam in December 1993.

These countries constitute the membership of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) – regional organization, which was formed in 1967 to promote cooperation and economic, political, security, military, educational and socio-cultural integration amongst its members and other Asian countries.

Trade between South Africa and ASEAN is growing quickly, in 2017, total trade was worth R112 billion.
