NEWSROOM (ADV) – The government has almost completed the drafting of a constitutional revision in accordance with the guidelines and axes defined by the decisions and recommendations of the Economic Community of West African States, indicates a statement published Wednesday.

‘This project will be formally adopted soon in the Council of Ministers and forwarded to the National Assembly’, says the text.

The project should include at least three fundamentals, the limitation to two of the number of presidential mandates, the introduction of a first-past-the-post system in two rounds for the presidential election and the recomposition of the Constitutional Court.

Several aspects are to be examined, such as Togolese legislation on the acquisition and loss of nationality and the respect of the laws of the countries where Togolese reside.

The authorities intend to draw on the practices of other countries in the subregion that have a lead over Togo in this area.

Finally, the eventual vote of Togolese from outside will have to meet a requirement of rigor and transparency.
