Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (ADV) – Kenya’s legendary athlete and ambassador to Austria is in police custody in Nairobi, for swindling 55 million Kenyan shillings, approximately US$545,000.

He faces court tomorrow, Friday, along with Kenya’s former cabinet Secretary for sports, Hassan Wario in connection with the same issue, media reports said in Nairobi Thursday quoting official sources.

Both men are alleged to have stolen the money which was destined to facilitate Kenya’s participation in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Keino, who is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was the chairman of the Kenyan Olympic Committee at the time of the Rio scandal.

He and Wario were arrested after surrendering themselves to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations as directed by the courts on Monday.

Ambassador Keino will face one count of abuse of office, while Wario will face six counts when they appear before the courts on Friday.

On Monday, several former personalities including Sports Principal Secretary Richard Ekai and now Kenyan ambassador to Russia appeared before a magistrate’s court in Nairobi but they all pleaded innocent of the charges of graft related to the Rio scandal.
