Casablanca, Morocco (ADV) – At least six people were killed and several injured Friday on the island of Caravela, in the archipelago Bissau-Guinean Bijagos, the fall of a cheese maker caused by a storm, said Saturday an administrative source.
More than 800 young people from all over the archipelago attended the Caravela cultural days when they were surprised by a storm accompanied by strong winds, said the sub-prefect of Formosa, chief town of the sector, Aliu Baldé.
“Many of them sheltered under the tree that did not withstand the strong wind” and hit them, said Baldé.
“We have counted six dead bodies,” said the official, noting that it was a “provisional record because many other people remained under the trunk”.
The island of Caravela is located at four hours of navigation of the capital, Bissau. During this winter season accidents are frequent in the archipelago, which has no civil protection service.
