Madagascar: President resigns for second term

Casablanca, Morocco (ADV) – The Malagasy President Hery Rajaonarimampianina presented Friday night his resignation for, in accordance with the country’s constitution, to launch his campaign for a second term in the election scheduled for the end of the year.

“Dear people, the time has come for me to resign in accordance with the Constitution, and today I have submitted to the Constitutional High Court a request for the formalization of this resignation,” he said at a meeting brief televised speech.

Elected in 2013 after a long period of political instability, M. Rajaonarimampianina has been hotly contested for a few months by his rivals, who accuse him of wanting to silence them.
