Addis Ababa (ADV) – Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki on Wednesday welcomed his Ethiopian counterpart, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed at the airport in Asmara for the second time after signing a peace agreement on 9 July 2018.

Analysts to ADV that the move was a mark of confidence of the peace accord signed by the two men during which they extended an invitation to each other to visit their countries “at any time”.

Eritrea’s state media said Abiy made an unannounced stopover in Asmara on his way from the just ended Forum for China – Africa Cooperation, FOCAC, summit in Beijing, China.

The Ethiopian leader was subsequently taken on a guided tour of the Eritrean port of Assab and the 71km-long road linking the Ethiopian border to the port which underpinned the July peace agreement.

The radio said Prime Minister Abiy will also visit the seaport of Massawa before his departure later the afternoon on Wednesday.

Ethiopia and Eritrea in July agreed to end a bloody war since 1998 over a border demarcation.
