Casablanca (ADV) – Egyptian police have killed four terrorists who attempted to carry out an attack on a security checkpoint on the coastal highway of North Sinai’s El-Arish, MENA state news agency reported on Saturday, citing an informed source.

The source said that the attackers were armed with heavy weapons, including a rocket-propelled grenade launcher.

Some of the terrorists involved in the attack managed to flee the scene, leaving behind 10 explosive charges that they had planned to use in the attack.

The attackers left behind four automatic weapons, 30 magazines, a number of RPG missiles, three explosive belts, a camera, a Motorola communication device and hand grenades, according to the source.

The incident comes amid Egypt’s ongoing Operation Sinai 2018, launched on 9 February “to implement the plan of comprehensive confrontation of terrorist and criminal elements and organisations in North and Central Sinai, and in other areas in the Nile Delta and desert areas west of the Nile Valley,” according to the Armed Forces.

The counter-terrorism operation involves land, naval and air forces, as well as the police and border guards.
