Casablanca (ADV) – Libyan navy on Sunday said it rescued 60 illegal immigrants on a broken rubber boat off the country’s western coast.

The navy said that the rescue operation took place off the town of Surman, some 50 km west of the capital Tripoli, and that the immigrants included four children.

Libya’s coast guard has been patrolling the Mediterranean Sea since striking a deal with Italy in February 2017 that empowered it to bring migrants back to their country for humanitarian purposes.
