Johannesburg, South Africa (ADV) – The head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State, Pope Francis, is set to visit Mauritius later this year, the government of Mauritius said on wednesday.
According to Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth he invited the Vatican head in November last year.
“It is an honour and a great privilege for us all, that Pope Francis has agreed to visit our multicultural country – the visit of the Pope will be a State visit, prepared with the collaboration of the Diocese of Port Louis,” said Jugnauth.
“A delegation from the Vatican was here earlier this month to effect site visits in the context of the forthcoming papal visit.”
The Prime Minister expressed his wish for the populace to welcome Pope Francis with the same enthusiasm and pomp as that received by Pope John II when he visited the country in 1989.
Mauritius’ Roman Catholic bishop, Cardinal Piat, noted that the Pope is a messenger of peace and his visit to Mauritius is being awaited not only by Christians but by all Mauritians.
“Pope Francis will also be visiting Mozambique and Madagascar from 4 to 10 September 2019,” said Piat.
