NEWSROOM (ADV) – The government of Niger has decided Friday in Niamey in Council of Ministers a further three-month extension, from March 18, of the state of emergency in the region of Diffa (east), border of Nigeria, and in Tillabery and Tahoua (west), near the borders of Mali and Burkina Faso, announced an official statement.

The security situation in these areas remains fragile, this draft order is made to ensure the safety of people and their property and restore public order in these parts of Niger.

In the east of the country, the measure covers the whole region of Diffa, while in the west it concerns precisely the departments of Ouallam, Ayorou, Bankilaré, Abala and Banibongou (Tillabéry region) and those of Tassara and Tillia (Tahoua region).

These regions of Niger have for some year’s undergone repeated attacks by terrorist forces, including the Islamist group Boko Haram in some localities of Diffa, and terrorist groups from northern Mali in the western part of Niger, which have left hundreds of civilian and military casualties and as many displaced from Niger, Mali and Nigeria.
